Why Convert Canon CR2 to JPEG?

CR2 is the RAW format Canon EOS DSLRs used for over a decade, from the 350D and original 5D up to the 5D Mark IV and 80D. Each file holds 14-bit sensor data with wide dynamic range, which is great for editing but produces 25 MB+ files most software cannot display. Converting CR2 to JPG creates small, shareable photos that open on any phone, browser or photo frame while your RAW originals remain safe for future edits.

CR2 was Canon's RAW format from roughly 2004 to 2018, used by EOS DSLRs such as the Rebel/xxxD series, the 60D through 90D, 7D, 6D and 5D lines. Newer mirrorless EOS R and M bodies switched to CR3.

A JPEG stores 8-bit compressed data, so it keeps less editing headroom than the 14-bit CR2, but for viewing, printing and sharing the visual difference is minimal at high quality. Keep the CR2 as your master file.

CR2 is TIFF-based and used by older Canon DSLRs; CR3 is a newer container introduced in 2018 with better compression. This page handles CR2 — we also offer a separate CR3 to JPG converter.
